Founded in November 2022, Blue North Initiative Canada is a charitable organization committed to the prevention and eradication of human trafficking through education, advocacy, and community empowerment, rooted in Manitoba and reaching across Canada.

Blue North Initiative (BNI) is a Canadian charitable non-governmental organization dedicated to the eradication of human trafficking through prevention, awareness, advocacy, and survivors support. The organization’s central mission is the prevention of human trafficking and the rehabilitation of survivors.
Founded in November 2022 by Mr. Calistus Ekenna, who was deeply disturbed by the extent of trafficking in Manitoba and Ontario, Blue North Initiative was established to take decisive action by focusing on awareness creation and support for survivors. Mr. Ekenna is a Canadian child protection specialist with a master of social work from University of Manitoba. He also brings extensive expertise from his previous work within Nigeria’s primary anti-trafficking agency. Mr. Ekenna is a member of Manitoba College of Social Workers and Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers.

We design and implement impactful campaigns targeting schools, communities, religious organizations, and at-risk populations with culturally relevant materials — empowering people to recognize, resist, and report trafficking.

Through workshops, seminars, and training programs, we equip individuals, families, and communities with the knowledge to identify warning signs. We also provide vocational training and personal development programs for at-risk populations.

We actively seek partnerships with local organizations, government entities, NGOs, and international bodies, coordinating responses, sharing intelligence, and advocating for stronger policies and law enforcement practices.

We provide comprehensive support services for survivors, including safe houses, psychological counseling, legal assistance, healthcare, and social reintegration support, creating a nurturing environment for recovery.

Our research and data collection efforts inform policy development and advocacy aimed at strengthening legal frameworks and improving responses from law enforcement and government agencies across Canada..

- OUR HISTORY
The Journey That Brought Us Here
Blue North Initiative Canada was officially established in November 2022 by Mr. Calistus Ekenna, who was deeply disturbed by the extent of trafficking in Manitoba and Ontario. Recognizing the alarming rise in cases and the devastating toll it takes on individuals and communities, he aimed to create a robust charitable organization that would enlighten the public, empower communities, and build capacity for sustainable change.
Blue North Initiative Canada officially established in Manitoba by Calistus Ekenna. Founded with a clear mission — to enhance public awareness of human trafficking and develop effective preventive measures across Canada.
CEO Calistus Ekenna published Trail of Desperation: A Case Book of Human Trafficking — contributing critical research to the global anti-trafficking conversation and establishing BNI as a thought-leading organization.
Began collaborative efforts with Canadian organizations including Joy Smith Foundation and SEAT. Launched community outreach programs across Manitoba, engaging diaspora members, newcomer groups, and Indigenous communities on trafficking risks.
Organized and led major awareness events across Manitoba including International Women's Day, Labour Day Awareness Drive, Children's Day Outreach, and the World Day Against Trafficking March. CEO engaged with Canadian federal policymakers at the Speaker's residence in Ottawa and met with Manitoba's Deputy Premier to strengthen anti-trafficking legislation.
Continuing community outreach across Manitoba — reaching Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, Birdtail Sioux, Canupawakpa, and newcomer groups in Brandon. Developing counseling services infrastructure — building toward a Canada where human trafficking cannot survive.

Calistus Ekenna
- FOUNDER, BLUE NORTH INITIATIVE
Calistus Ekenna is a Canadian child protection specialist and the founder of Blue North Initiative Canada. Deeply disturbed by the extent of trafficking in Manitoba and Ontario, he established Blue North Initiative in November 2022 to take decisive action through awareness creation and support for survivors.
With over 15 years of experience in social services across Canada and Nigeria, Calistus brings unique expertise that bridges two continents and two decades of frontline anti-trafficking work. He is also the author of Trail of Desperation: A Case Book of Human Trafficking (2022).
He currently serves as a Trustee on the Brandon School Division Board in Manitoba, and is a recognized voice in Canadian federal policy discussions on human trafficking.
